How does it work?

The active ingredient in alli attaches to some of the natural enzymes in the digestive system, preventing them from breaking down about a quarter of the fat you eat. Undigested fat cannot be absorbed and passes through the body naturally. The excess fat is not harmful. alli only works on enzymes that break down fat, not on other enzymes. So carbohydrates and proteins are not affected. You still absorb those nutrients. But, since fat grams have more than twice as many calories as carbs and proteins, alli capsules work on the worst offenders – the calorie-dense fat grams. Generic alli is used together with a reduced-calorie diet and weight maintenance to treat obesity in people with certain risk factors (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol or triglycerides).

Drug class and mechanism

Orlistat is a drug that promotes loss of weight by preventing the digestion and absorption of fat in food. In the intestine, an enzyme called lipase (produced primarily by the pancreas) breaks apart fat in food so that it can be absorbed into the body. Orlistat blocks the action of lipase and thereby prevents the breakup and absorption of fat. Orlistat blocks absorption of about 25% of the fat in a meal. The unabsorbed fat is excreted in the stool. The FDA approved Orlistat by prescription in 1999. alli, a lower dose formulation of orlistat, was approved for purchase without a prescription “over the counter” in 2007.

Drug Uses

Alli (Orlistat) is used together with a reduced-calorie diet and weight maintenance to treat obesity in people with certain risk factors (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol or triglycerides). Alli (Orlistat) blocks some of the fat that you eat, keeping it from being absorbed by your body.Alli ( Orlistat) is only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes diet, exercise, and weight control. Your daily intake of fat, protein, and carbohydrates should be evenly divided over all of your daily meals. Follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines very closely.

How should I take alli?

  • Take a multivitamin once a day, at bedtime, when using alli capsules

Do not take alli if:

  • You have had an organ transplant. alli interferes with the medicines used to prevent transplant rejection
  • If you are taking cyclosporine

  • If you are not overweight

Ask a doctor before use if you have ever had:

  • Gallbladder problems
  • Kidney stones
